I created a custom virtual camera rig using Unreal Engine’s Virtual Camera iPad app, a shoulder-mounted camera support, and 3D-printed controller mounts. The setup allowed me to operate an iPad-based virtual camera while using Nintendo Switch controllers to navigate through an Unreal Engine environment.
To make the rig more ergonomic, I modeled and 3D printed custom mounts that allowed the Switch controllers to slide into place and lock onto the shoulder rig. This gave the setup a more physical camera-operating feel while still providing direct control over movement inside the Unreal scene.
The project built on a more advanced virtual camera workflow I previously developed at Blur Studio for the Secret Level: Unreal Tournament episode. On that production, I used Blueprints to bind Switch controller inputs to custom virtual camera functions needed by the team. That system also included editor utility scripts so recorded takes could be reviewed and ingested into the production’s shot browser workflow.
For this Image Cauldron / WET Design setup, I kept the control scheme simpler, with record and stop functions mapped for quick operation. The goal was to create a practical, lightweight virtual camera tool that could be used for architectural visualization, virtual scouting, and real-time environment reviews on the LED volume stage.
